Felix Verdejo named a person of interest in death of 27 year old woman
Lightweight contender Felix “El Diamante” Verdejo (27-2, 17KOs) has possibly found himself entrenched in some major trouble in his home country of Puerto Rico.
At one point, Verdejo was considered a surefire lightweight prospect tabbed to become world champion. However, the 2012 Olympian would face setbacks inside and outside of the ring. Outside, there was the lack of focus and dedication in preparation for fights. Inside, he suffered two knockout losses to Antonio Torres and Masayoshi Nakatani. He would also suffer injuries in a 2016 motorcycle accident that raised more eyebrows. El Diamante was also set to face former WBO Lightweight champion Terry Flanagan in September of 2017. However, Flanagan would suffer an injury, nixing the bout.
WHAT IS CURRENTLY KNOWN?
Verdejo is named as a person of interest in the missing, now murder case of 27-year old Keishla Marlen Rodriguez Ortiz. Allegations are that Rodriguez was pregnant with Verdejo’s child. While the Puerto Rican fighter is married, Rodriguez was said to be his mistress.
Reportedly, Verdejo was down at police headquarters to answer questions. According to the captain of the San Juan CIC, Luis Diaz, Verdejo refused to make a statement or answer questions. He is a person of interest because the victim’s mother stated her daughter (Ortiz) and Verdejo were in a relationship. Ortiz, according to her mother’s statements, told her on the phone that she was going to meet up with Verdejo to discuss the pregnancy. Ortiz would not be seen nor heard from again and was reported missing on Thursday April 29.
On May 1, Ortiz’s body was discovered in a lagoon and identified by her dental records. Verdejo’s car has been seized by police officials, who are seeking evidence on a possible connection between Verdejo and Ortiz. At this time, Verdejo is only viewed as a person of interest and has not been charged with any crime.
Top Rank released a statement saying they are aware of the situation and sent their condolences to the Ortiz family.
“Top Rank’s thoughts and prayers are with Keishla Marlen Rodriguez Ortiz’s family and friends, and with all those in mourning.”
“We are deeply disturbed by the news reports, and we will continue to monitor developments in the case as it progresses.”
Following investigations, Felix Verdejo has turned himself into the authorities.
3kingsboxing.com will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
