Fabio Wardley, Galal Yafai and Austin Williams All Win By Stoppage!
Heavyweight hopeful Fabio Wardley (16-0, 15KO) got a questionable stoppage over Michael Polite Coffie (13-4, 10KO). The fight was uneventful early as Wardley came forward behind the jab against the retreating Coffie, who was looking to counterpunch. Both fighters had moments in the fight, as Coffie used his massive size to corner the British fighter before landing good shots to the body.
Wardley landed some solid right hands down the middle behind pole-like jabs. In round four, Wardley landed a right hand that forced Coffie to the ropes and he threw a flurry of unanswered punches that prompted the referee to stop the fight. In Coffie’s defense, he was dodging and slipping some of those punches and never showed any signs of being hurt. Nonetheless, Wardley picks up the victory. In the post-fight interview, he expressed wanting to fight rising prospect Frazer Clarke.
GALAL YAFAI MAKES QUICK WORK OF VETERAN MOISES CALLEROS
Fast-rising flyweight prospect Galal Yafai (4-0, 3KO) ran over veteran Mexican Moises Calleros (36-12-1, 19KO). The 2020 Olympic gold medalist came out clicking on all cylinders after a slow start against Calleros. Yafai boxed beautifully and landed short, compact uppercuts against the over-aggressive Calleros, who came forward with his head down and looking to get inside.
After getting hit by a good right hand, Yafai ripped off a three-punch combination that dropped the Mexican in the fourth round. Although Calleros beat the count, the referee felt he couldn’t continue and waved off the contest. An argument can be made it was an early stoppage, but it was clear Calleros was headed toward getting stopped as he was taking punishment before getting knocked down. Yafai talked about challenging for a world title by the end of the year but admitted to needing more fights.
AUSTIN WILLIAMS OVERPOWERS RIVER WILSON-BENT DOWN THE STRETCH
Middleweight Austin “Ammo” Williams (14-0, 10KO) was tested early, before scoring the victory over River Wilson-Bent (14-3-1, 6KO). Bent came out using the height and reach advantage to keep the hard-hitting Ammo at bay with solid combinations built off the jab. However, Williams turned it up and started to land the straight left hand as Bent was backpedaling with his chin exposed.
The story of the fight changed as Williams came forward, landing brutal body shots and counterpunches upstairs that dropped his opponent in the seventh round. Although Bent survived the round, things did not get any easier in the eighth round as Ammo unloaded punches like a video game character with unlimited energy. After landing a barrage of unanswered shots, River’s corner threw in the towel, stopping the fight. Williams got a good momentum-building victory heading toward a clash in the summer against rival Felix Cash.
