WBA President Gilberto Mendoza Approves Errol Spence v Yordenis Ugas Unification!

It appears that WBA welterweight champion Yordenis “54 Milagros” Ugas (27-4, 12KOs) will get his wish and take on WBC and IBF champion Errol “The Truth” Spence (27-0, 21KOs) in a high stakes unification bout in 2022.

The news comes from WBA president Gilberto Mendoza who initially ordered Ugas to face mandatory Eimantas Stanionis (13-0, 9KOs) in his next title defense. However, Stanionis ultimately agreed to a step-aside deal to allow for such a huge fight to take place. He will face unbeaten WBA regular welterweight champion Radzhab Butaev (14-0, 11KOs) next.

Ugas, who fought the ruling from the get-go, has to be pleased. Immediately after upsetting Manny Pacquiao in August, he turned his attention to Spence. The Cuban champion has been on record repeatedly stating that he only wanted to face the best. Obviously Spence fits in that category.

For Spence, this will be his first fight since December of 2020 when he beat Danny Garcia to retain his titles. He was to face Pacquiao in August. However, he was forced to withdraw due to a detached retina.

This matchup will put the winner one step closer to their goal of becoming undisputed welterweight champion. Waiting in the wings will be WBO welterweight champion Terence “Bud” Crawford (39-0, 28KOs). Crawford is still riding high off his tenth round stoppage over former two-time welterweight champion Shawn Porter back on November 20.

Now a free-agent, Crawford has been hot on the heels of Spence, throwing verbal disrespect towards the unified champion. This is great news regardless of who wins, as it appears that boxing will witness a four-belt showdown at some point in 2022 for welterweight supremacy.

There’s currently no date set for Spence v Ugas. 3kingsboxing.com will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
