Leigh Wood Granted Championship Fight with Leo Santa Cruz!
WBA Regular 126-pound champion Leigh “Leigh-thal” Wood (26-2, 16KOs) will get his wish to face WBA Super featherweight champion “El Terremoto” Leo Santa Cruz (38-2-1, 19KOs). This comes after the WBA announced that it had officially ordered Cruz to defend his title against Wood. After his dramatic twelfth round TKO win over Michael Conlan, Wood would call out Santa Cruz. With this news, both parties have 30 days to reach a deal or go to a purse bid.
If made, this fight has major Fight of the Year potential. Santa Cruz is an all-action fighter who throws punches in bunches. Wood is a guy that possesses knockout power accompanied by his willingness to fight fire with fire. His knockout of Conlan is arguably the current lead Knockout of the Year candidate. At 33 years old, Wood is relishing his newfound success, which he hopes continues with a win over Santa Cruz.
Santa Cruz, on the other hand, ended a year-plus layoff from the ring by easily dominating Keenan Carbajal for a ten-round unanimous decision victory. It was his first fight back since being brutally knocked out by Gervonta Davis in October of 2020. Prior to this decision by the WBA, Santa Cruz stated he wanted to face WBC featherweight champion Mark Magsayo in a unification bout.
3kings Boxing will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
