WBA Sets Dmitry Bivol v Gilberto Ramirez Purse Bid Date for August 21
Back in July, 3Kings Boxing reported that the WBA ordered a fight between Super WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol (20-0, 11 KO’s) and #1 (WBA), #2 (WBO) and #5 (IBF) ranked Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez (44-0, 30 KO’s). Now the WBA has applied foot to the gas pedal by assigning an August 21 purse bid.
The fight will mark Zurdo’s first attempt at a light heavyweight title. To get the shot against Bivol kills two birds with one stone. That is due to the fact that Ramirez, a former WBO super middleweight champion, has been calling for this fight since 2021. Barring the unforeseen, it looks like the Mexican will have his cake and eat it too.
SOMEONE HIS OWN SIZE
As for Bivol, he is back to business as usual, in that he will compete with an actual light heavyweight fighter. In his last fight, boxing poster boy Saul “Canelo” Alvarez hopped to the 175-pound weight division to challenge Bivol for his belt. It was the second time that the red-head ventured in that neck of the woods. This time, he was obliged with a bout in which he was thoroughly out-boxed and sent packing by the Kyrgyzstani.
Having been so efficiently spanked, it was only natural that Canelo said he wanted to run it right back with Bivol. Clearly, he or his team thought better of the matter. In his next bout, Alvarez, who remains the undisputed middleweight champion, will face IBF and WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin. Honestly though, it’s hard not to view the unasked for trilogy as a ‘get back’ confidence-builder for Alvarez. Yet, with the superstar having returned to the territory he controls, Bivol was free to finally settle this business with Ramirez.
