WBC Slots Errol Spence at #3 at Super Welterweight!
After suffering his first professional loss, former WBA, IBF and WBC welterweight champion Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr (28-1, 22 KO’s) was given a bleak forecast by many fans and insiders. Following the thorough beating that undisputed 147-pound champion Terence Crawford (40-0, 31 KO’s) tossed him, it became a common talking point that he should retire. Clearly, the WBC did not agree with that prognosis. This is evidenced by the fact that in their most recent update, they had Spence listed as their #3 super welterweight.
LET’S TAKE THIS UPSTAIRS
At the moment, it appears that Spence will rematch Crawford. It was widely confirmed that there was a rematch clause in their contract and The Truth was intent on activating it. By the same token, Crawford has repeatedly said that he is 100% committed to honoring the contract and Spence. So, given this interaction, one can only imagine that they will run it back in the fourth quarter of 2023 or the first quarter of 2024.
The WBC also recently gave three division champion Vasily Lomachenko a very favorable rating following a loss. When the Ukrainian suffered a unanimous decision loss to undisputed champion Devin Haney, the WBC armored him with a #1 lightweight ranking. Therefore, supplying The Truth with the high-powered standing should not be a complete surprise. So it definitely will be intriguing to watch the next chapter of Crawford and Spence unfold in the super welterweight division.
