WBO orders Jamel Herring to make his first title defense against Lamaont Roach Jr.
The WBO has ordered a title match between their newly crowned junior lightweight champion Jamel Herring (20-2, 10KOs) and #1 contenter/International champion Lamont Roach (19-0-1, 7KOs).
Both sides have 30 days to reach an agreement. The WBO will order a purse bid if they fail to do so.
Herring won the title by defeating Masayuki Ito via unanimous decision on May 25. He would prefer to face WBC champion Miguel Berchelt (36-1, 32KOs) in a unification match.
However, that seems unlikely at this moment in time.
Roach, age 23, is an unbeaten contender who’s coming off of a unanimous decision over longtime contender Jonathan Oquendo on May 4. He’s also fought to a draw with another longtime contender in Orlando Cruz in April of 2018.
Assuming a deal reaches completion, this will be, by far, Roach’s biggest fight as it is his first opportunity to fight for a world title.
