Jaron Ennis Eyes Errol Spence as IBF Interim Title Fight Looms
IBF number one welterweight contender Jaron “Boots” Ennis (29-0, 27KO) is as confident as a fighter can be. Knowing the time to fight for a title is within his grasp, Ennis took another shot at “The Big Fish” unified welterweight champion Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr (28-0, 22KO).
Ennis has been adding to his boogeyman status with meme-style knockouts while the rest of the boxing community is waiting for the undisputed fight with WBO champion Terence Crawford to take place. On January 7, he will be fighting number-four ranked Karen Chukhadzhian (21-1, 11KO) for the IBF interim title. During the final press conference, the Philadelphia native spoke with the media about how the undisputed fight is holding things up, but it won’t stop him from continuing to win.
“Like I said before, they can get it now. They holding up the weight division right now, but whatever way it goes, I’m going to be ready. Whether I fight for a vacant belt, whether I fight one of them, it doesn’t matter . . . I’m young, I’m hungry, and I’m gonna keep shining and demolishing these guys they put in front of me.”
A STATEMENT AIMED AT THE UNIFIED CHAMPION
In the past, Spence has referred to himself as the big fish of the division. On May 14, 2022, Ennis ran over Custio Clayton to claim the top spot and quickly took a shot at Big Fish himself.
Ennis again took a shot at Spence’s “Big Fish” comment when asked what type of bait he will use to land the fight.
“Any bait. You know what happens when they bring fish to land right? They squeal.”
