Shakur Stevenson Fires Back at Chris Colbert Following Garcia Loss
On February 26, junior lightweight Chris “Primetime” Colbert (16-1, 6 KO’s) was overconfident, and replacement fighter Hector Garcia (15-0, 10 KO’s) capitalized on it by shocking the boxing community with the win. WBO champion Shakur “Fearless” Stevenson (17-0, 9 KO’s) took to social media to point out how Primetime was all talk.
A CARDINAL SIN
The worst thing any fighter can do is overlook an opponent. It is the biggest cardinal sin in all of boxing. Whenever a fighter reaches a certain level, they start believing all the hype about themselves, and it always comes back to haunt them.
Colbert was supposed to face WBA Regular champion Roger Gutierrez until COVID-19 struck the champion, preventing him from competing. Queue incoming 2016 Olympian Garcia as an unknown late replacement fighter.
What should have been an easy night’s work turned into a nightmare for the Brooklyn native. Garcia virtually beat Primetime from corner to corner in the ring. Moreover, he became the first man to ever put Colbert on his back after landing a perfect counter left hand, shocking the world with the dominant victory.
STEVENSON CLAPS BACK
Leading up to the contest, the signs were there that Colbert was heading into dangerous waters. During an interview on the Last Stand Podcast, Colbert was more focused on future fights with three-divisional champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis and Stevenson. Furthermore, he made a statement that was very puzzling, claiming that boxing is not fun and his time in the sport was going to be short.
Putting the cart before the horse, Primetime mentioned wanting to fight Stevenson, and called into question the dog inside Fearless. The internet is the undisputed, undefeated champion as Stevenson, after watching the upset, took to social media clapping back hard at Colbert.
However, Stevenson showed some mercy for the fallen fighter as he respected the fact that Colbert accepted the defeat without making no excuses.
