Deontay Wilder v Joe Joyce WBC Title Fight Could Happen if Fury Retires
The boxing community has heard little from former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay “The Bronze Bomber” Wilder (42-2-1, 41KOs) lately. He most recently resurfaced to be honored with a statue by his hometown of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. However, this is the most newsworthy he’s been since suffering his trilogy defeat to WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury (32-0-1, 23KOs) last October.
Prior to his defeats to Fury, he made 10 successful defenses of his WBC belt. Wilder has been noncommittal regarding his return to the sport. However, one has to think: what would get his blood boiling and push him to return?
TWO-TIME WBC CHAMPION?
To be clear, the following is all hypothetical. For one Tyson Fury is still the WBC heavyweight champion. Although he stated after his sixth round knockout victory over Dillian Whyte back in April that he was retiring. He’s also been vocal that Wilder should get the next shot at the WBC belt, if he retires.
Secondly, Wilder is ranked number one in the WBC standings and is primed to challenge for the title possibly in 2023. However, if Fury stays true to his word and retires, that would pave way for Wilder to face WBC #2 contender Joe Joyce for the vacant title.
A matchup between Wilder and Joyce is highly intriguing. Wilder has the explosive power that has stopped the majority of his opponents in their tracks. As for Joyce, like Wilder he’s extremely awkward. A 2016 Olympic Silver medalist, he’s a bit robotic in his movement, but packs a big punch with a good chin. The biggest win so far in his career came when he stopped highly regarded prospect Daniel Dubois in ten rounds back in 2020.
While nothing is imminent, this is a fight people should keep an eye on. Especially if Wilder returns and is only looking to face top contenders in his pursuit of becoming a champion again.
