The WBC confirms that a Wilder vs Ortiz rematch is a possibility!
As of last night, Luis Ortiz is back in the winner’s column. Not only that, he has also placed himself back into the World Heavyweight Championship picture. “King Kong” made it very clear in his statements last night that he would like a rematch with WBC Champion Deontay Wilder. Otherwise, he’d take a match against unified Heavyweight kingpin Anthony Joshua.
During the Showtime post-fight interview, Ortiz stated that he still felt undefeated. In his mind, he never lost to WBC champ Deontay Wilder.
When asked about Joshua, Ortiz stated “I want to fight Joshua, but he only fights boxers he’s sure he can defeat. I’m going to ask the government to place me on disability so that maybe that way Joshua will fight me.”
Personally, I wouldn’t want to see an immediate rematch between Ortiz and Wilder. It is not like their fight ended with a controversial decision. Wilder was able to make the necessary changes in their much-anticipated bout and ended the fight with a tremendous stoppage. With last night’s showing, I imagine the public would be more interested in seeing “King Kong” fight Joshua.
Most fight fans, including myself, would most likely use that fight as a measuring stick to see how Joshua would fair against Wilder. However, there is one slight problem to this idea. Joshua is already locked in to fight another top guy in the division; Alexander Povetkin.
At this stage, Ortiz should fight the winner of last night’s Heavyweight contest Dylan White. Thereafter, the winner of that bout should fight the winner of Joshua vs Povetkin.
Ortiz cannot afford to wait too long. He claims that he is 39 years old, but some people have rumored that he might even be a bit older. Whatever the rumors are, Ortiz did make a great case for himself last night. He ended the show with his now infamous straight left hand. He wasn’t only fighting a fringe contender last night, he was also fighting against father time. We all know that it’s only a matter of time when father time will have his rematch and defeat the at-times unstoppable force we know as The Real King Kong.
