Julian Williams drops, shocks Jarrett Hurd to become unified champion in a thriller!
Boy we were treated to arguably the best fight of 2019! At least so far!
Julian “J-Rock” Williams came out hitting on all cylinders. The game plan, which he executed to near perfection, immediately threw the champion off his game and out of his rhythm.
After a feel-each-other-out first round, the action heated up! Williams forced the bigger taller Hurd back into the ropes and went to work. Then, with under a minute left to go in round two, boom! A hard left hook to the top of the head of Hurd sent the champion down.
That knockdown would be the beginning of something intense and spirited from both men. Electing to take the fight on the inside, Williams would do work to the body and head throughout the early portion of the fight. Hurd refused be outdone.
He bit down on his mouth piece and went to work as well. Known for his pressure and body assault, the champion started getting into a groove. A back and forth battle would ensue as both men laid it all on the line!
Williams, however, would steal back the momentum from the champion in the middle rounds. He slowed the fight down by electing to box using an effective jab to set up three-punch combinations and countering effectively from the outside.
Williams was also impressive defensively. He effectively slipped and rolled punches in key moments of the fight even while taking hard shots. In particular the eleventh and twelfth rounds.
The Verdict
In the end, we crowned a new unified junior middleweight champion. Williams would win a unanimous decision with scores of 116-111 and 115-112 twice.
This fight will go down in history as an absolute war! Also, with the contractual rematch clause in place, we could be in store for the sequel later this year.
