Zayas Has More To Do Before Facing The Elite at 154lbs
Xander Zayas is undoubtedly a rising force in the junior middleweight division. But let’s not put the cart before the horse. Suggesting he’s ready to face the very best at 154 pounds, particularly unified champion Sebastian “The Towering Inferno” Fundora or IBF titleholder Bakhram Murtazaliev, is a bit premature.
Fighting in front of a packed Madison Square Garden Theater on July 27, Zayas (22-0, 13 KOs) captured the vacant WBO title with a unanimous decision win over Perez. In his post-fight interview, the newly crowned champion expressed his desire to face either Fundora or Murtazaliev by year’s end.
Calling them out is one thing. Showing you’re ready for that leap in class is another. Fundora (23-1-1, 15 KOs) presents a uniquely difficult challenge with his height, reach, and relentless work-rate. Murtazaliev (23-0, 17 KOs) is a physically strong, heavy-handed fighter. Both champions have significantly more experience than Zayas, who, despite victorious over Garcia, proved hittable at times.
Zayas’ talent is undeniable, but he still needs seasoning. It would serve his team well to guide the 22-year-old through a few title defenses and help him further round out his skill set. His confidence and ambition are admirable, but for now, he’s simply not ready for that level of opposition.
