The IBF may order Abdukakhorov vs Obara as the IBF title eliminator after Jessie Vargas declined the offer!
Recently, the IBF ordered former WBO Champion Jessie Vargas (28-2-2, 10KOs) to face undefeated Uzbekistani Kudratillo Abdukakhorov (15-0, 9KOs) in a title eliminator.
However, with Vargas declining, the opportunity could go to #6 ranked Keita Obara (20-3-1, 18KOs) from Japan.
Abdukakhorov (25), is ranked #4 and this opportunity will help him get in the mix of a loaded division. He has traveled to many countries, however, has yet to set foot on American soil for a bout.
Obara (31), is a former title contender at super lightweight. He has only fought outside of his native country twice, one of which a draw against Walter Castillo in Florida.
Neither fighter is well known throughout the boxing community. However, Obara has slightly a better resume as he faced former IBF junior welterweight champion Eduard Troyanovsky.
One may ask “why is the IBF skipping #2 ranked Yordenis Ugas” who has been on record calling out the IBF champion Errol Spence. In addition, Kerman Lejarraga is ranked #5, but is skipped over for Obara. Lejarraga will face British contender Frankie Gavin in November, although, Ugas does not currently have a fight scheduled.
If this fight takes place, the targeted date and location is January 5 in Malaysia.
