Alaniz vs Fundora Undisputed Bout Should Be Top Priority
Unified flyweight champion Gabriela “La Chucky” Alaniz (15-1, 6KO) may fight Marlen Esparza (14-2, 1KO) in a trilogy. However, her top priority should be the undisputed showdown against WBO champion Gabriela “Sweet Poison” Fundora (12-0, 5KO).
On April 27, La Chucky avenged the only blemish on her record by Esparza from their first encounter in July 2023. The Argentinian fought in the same fashion as the first fight but with a little more aggression. Esparza had lost the belts on the scale and was stripped of the titles. Yet, she still needed to win to keep her record intact for a big fight later.
In the end, this time around two judges saw it in favor of Alaniz with one seeing it for Esparza. Now a unified champion, she has options that have some financial benefits.
UNDISPUTED NEEDS HAPPEN NEXT
She could look to do a trilogy with the former unified champion providing Golden Boy Promotions still has plans in place to make Esparza versus Fundora for undisputed.
Providing there is no rematch clause, Alaniz needs to go straight into the undisputed showdown against Fundora. This option seems to be the more sensible decision considering Esparza probably can’t make the weight. Plus, she would earn more money and add to her legacy by becoming undisputed.
Fundora is coming off an incredible run. After stopping Arely Mucino for the title in five rounds in 2023, she scored another stoppage against Christina Cruz in 2024. In addition, Sweet Poison is arguably the favorite to win undisputed regardless of who she may face.
The time to make the fight is now for it has the potential of being an instant classic. The high-volume pressure style of Alaniz would provide plenty of action against the tall, offensive-minded Fundora.
