Gervonta Davis Stealthily Takes Grievance with Floyd Mayweather to Social Media
The divide between WBA Regular lightweight champ Gervonta “Tank” Davis (26-0, 24 KOs) and his promoter, Floyd Mayweather, seems to be getting wider and wider. Davis is set to make the third defense of the lightweight belt on May 28 against mandatory challenger Rolando “Rolly” Romero (14-0, 12 KOs). Originally scheduled to fight on December 5, 2021, the bout was cancelled after Romero was accused of sexual assault. Now that Romero is cleared by Henderson County Nevada investigators, the fight is back on.
NOWHERE TO BE FOUND?
A pre-fight event took place for the rescheduled bout on April 7. Davis and Romero exchanged plenty of insults and threats. But there was one noticeable absence from the event, and that was Mayweather.
On the same day as this presser was going on, the head of Mayweather Promotions held a separate press conference. He was announcing an eight-round exhibition he’s having against long-time sparring partner Don Moore atop a helicopter launching pad at the Burj Al Arab Hotel in Dubai on May 14. At the end of his press conference, Davis took to social media with a comment which seemed directed toward his promoter.
Now, Davis has since deleted this message. But evidently, the fighter did not account for something called a “screenshot”. Deleted message be damned, fans and pundits jumped all over this. 3Kings Boxing previously reported the lightweight champ expressed frustration with Mayweather on social media. He also announced that his contract with Mayweather Promotions has run its course. In response, “Money” Mayweather gave a figurative shrug saying “nothing lasts forever”.
It’s custom for a promoter to be present at a news conference involving their fighter. Mayweather not attending and purposely holding a presser to promote his own event raises eyebrows. If that’s not a sign there’s dissension in the ranks, I don’t know what is. Whether Mayweather does anything to promote Davis v Romero is now a serious question.
IT SEEMED ALL-GOOD ONCE AGO
At one time, it seemed like Mayweather v Davis would be a perfect match given the current dynamics of the sport. Both are flashy and flamboyant with an understanding of how to garner attention. They have that “it” factor that keeps fans talking.
When Davis won his first world title in January 2017, Mayweather said his goal was to turn him into a superstar. In many ways, he’s succeeded in that goal. The power-hitting southpaw from Baltimore is one of the more popular fighters in the United States and a PPV attraction. But as the years have passed, there have been several rough patches. Now it seems their relationship is irreconcilable at this point.
