Alycia Baumgardner vs Delfine Persoon Called Off Over a Cut
The highly anticipated battle between undisputed junior lightweight champion Alycia “The Bomb” Baumgardner (15-1, 7 KOs) and mandatory challenger Delfine Persoon (49-3, 19 KOs) ended in an anti-climatic manner as this fight was ruled no contest.
Fighting at the Lux Center in Atlanta, Georgia, the defending champion started very well. In the closing seconds of round one, The Bomb was credited with a knockdown when a left hook caused the gloves of Persoon to touch the canvas.
Boxing effectively behind the left jab, Baumgardner also won round two. Persoon began to find her groove in round three as she applied more pressure and landed some solid right hands. However, at the halfway mark of the fourth, an accidental clash of heads caused a nasty gash over the eye of the challenger. The ringside doctor ruled that the cut was too severe for Persoon to continue.
Both fighters were frustrated. When the action was starting to heat up, it was over. Look for Baumgardner and Persoon to fight again in 2025.
