Demetrius Andrade set to defend title against Artur Akavov
WBO middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade will make his first title defense against Artur Akavov 3kingsboxing.com has learned.
The fight will take place January 18 in New York.
Recently, Providence police arrested Andrade for unlawful possession of a handgun. Although pending, the case will not interfere with his return.
In October, Andrade dropped Walter Kautondokwa four times en route to a unanimous decision victory, as a result, claiming the vacant belt.
As for his opponent Akavov, not much is known about him outside of being ranked #8 by the WBO. He has, however, been in the ring with former middleweight titlist Billy Joe Saunders; losing by a unanimous decision.
Additionally, his record (19-2, 8KOs) indicates he’s not much of a puncher having only eight knockouts in twenty-one career bouts.
At (33), this is a life changing opportunity for him as an upset over Andrade would be monumental for his career.
Also of note, Jarrell Miller and Chris Algieri are reportedly expected to be on the DAZN card as well.
Algieri is in the process of making a comeback after being out of the sport for over two years. He won a unanimous decision in November for his first comeback bout.
Miller has been on a tear! This will be his fourth fight in nine months and his third with DAZN if he decides to appear on this card.
