Leo Scores An Impressive Stoppage; McCumby Cruises To Victory
Now competing at featherweight, former WBO super bantamweight champion Angelo “El Chinito” Leo (23-1, 11KO) annihilated Mike Plania with a vicious body shot.
The fight started with the quick hands and counterpunching of Plania controling the first round. Then Leo shifted gears and got right up in the chest of the Filipino. Both men decided to fight in a phone booth, and were landing solid hard shots.
In round three, Leo went on an all-out body assault, which put Plania in defensive mode. After landing several hard shots, he finally found the sweet spot with a left hook that took the fight out of Plania.
The referee initially ruled it a low blow before it was quickly changed to a legal body shot, giving Leo the stoppage victory. Ranked #9 by the WBA, El Chinito is on a mission to become a two-divisional champion.
The New Mexico native needed to make a statement of this magnitude that he will be a major player in the division.
TREVOR MCCUMBY OVERWHELMS CHRISTOPHER PEARSON FOR THE WIN
Super middleweight “Tenacious” Trevor McCumby (28-0, 21KO) outworked veteran Christopher Pearson (17-4-1, 12KO) for the unanimous victory.
Tenacious was sharp from the opening bell, fighting on the front foot behind the jab. He took control of the contest early, stalking and landing fast combination punches that kept Pearson in defense mode.
Things got a little interesting in round four when a clash of heads caused a cut on the right eye. Realizing the fight could possibly be stopped, McCumby turned it up with volume punches. He even started landing hard hooks to the body as his opponent was content with being a punching bag.
Pearson finally came alive in the closing rounds as he did a good job of landing left hands with the catch-and-shot combination. However, McCumby came roaring back with power shots that had the Ohioan in survival mode.
The judges scored it 100-90, 99-91, and 97-93 all in favor of McCumby, who showed a solid skillset and that he has a motor. 3Kings Boxing agrees with the first scorecard.
