Sebastian Fundora Targets Jaron Ennis to Determine 154-pound Supremacy
WBC junior middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora has made it clear that his ultimate target is Jaron “Boots” Ennis. Fundora (24-1-1, 16 KOs) is preparing to defend his WBC title against mandatory challenger Ermal Hadribeaj on October 17. However, his sights are already set on what could be the biggest fight available at 154 pounds.
FUNDORA WANTS BOOTS
The first order of business for the WBC belt-holder is taking care of Hadribeaj. Even so, during an exclusive interview with Premier Boxing Champions, the champion made no secret of his desire to get in the ring with Boots.
“I definitely do want to fight Ennis next. […] I mean, I definitely think that I’m the best at 154. There’s a lot of people who think that too. But I mean, this fight is here to make, and I think that’s one of the biggest fights right here at 154.”
That fight, however, could have to wait. Ennis (36-0, 32 KOs) is currently in negotiations for a unification showdown with IBF champion Josh Kelly. That bout is reportedly targeted for December or early 2027. Team Kelly has indicated that the deal is essentially complete, with a date and venue remaining to be finalized. Whether Ennis-Kelly gets finalized or not, Fundora remains adamant that he wants to face the unified champion.
A MUCH-NEEDED SHOWDOWN
The interest is mutual. Ennis has previously expressed his desire to fight Fundora, while his promoter Eddie Hearn has said Fundora was Ennis’ preferred opponent. That shared interest is precisely what boxing fans should welcome. There is no need for manufactured rivalries or endless social-media callouts when two elite champions actually want to fight each other.
Fundora’s size, awkwardness and experience against top-level junior middleweights would present Ennis with perhaps his most intriguing challenge since moving to 154. Ennis, meanwhile, brings elite speed, versatility and power.
With boxing desperately needing a shot in the arm, Ennis-Fundora would certainly qualify. If both fighters continue winning, a showdown in 2027 could determine who truly deserves to be called the best fighter in the division.
