Bob Arum and Eddie Hearn speak on working with one another.
Top Rank Chairman Bob Arum and Matchroom Boxing Director Eddie Hearn understand the value of working together in todays fight market.
The huge success of the unification match-up between junior welterweight champions Maurice Hooker and Jose Ramirez definitely is a sign of more things to come!
In a post fight press conference, the two top promotional figures provided some honesty, rarely seen from most promoters in the sport.
The charismatic UK promoter explained a few things about his American counterpart saying:
“What I love about Bob is he will categorically slag you off to your face. He will verbally abuse you.
“He will make you feel like so big and you will leave that conversation like ‘FUCK BOB ARUM!’
“Then he will phone you up a minute later [talking] about this fight.”
The always vocal Arum would interject.
“Because only a moron takes any of this stuff seriously. I mean you gotta be NUTS to take it seriously.
“I love this guy (Eddie). I love his father. I mean what am I gonna say, but I’ll slack off on you and you can do the same to me that’s ok.”
The jubilant exchange was enjoyable to see between the two as the Matchroom promoter would finish up his statement saying:
“There are a lot of similarities between the two companies. What they’ve done is America (Top Rank) is very similar to our position in the UK.
“We’ve got people on the same kind of level so we get deals done very quickly. We are very competitive against each other and it’s great for boxing.”
The entire boxing community for years have wanted to see top fighters fighting each other and are getting restless with the whole “marination” part of the sport.
For the most part, both fans and pundits have a better understanding of how the business works. However, most feel that not all fights need “marinating.”
This approach by both promotional entities is refreshing and hopefully will lead to more great fights down the line.
