Abass Baraou Thrills In Tellez Win & Inches Closer to Crawford
When last under the hot lights of the boxing ring, super welterweight fighter Abass Baraou (17-1,9 KO’s) changed his fortune in a major way. The German bruiser accomplished this by thumping and battering Yoenis Tellez over twelve rounds to snatch a unanimous decision win. With the spoils of war, Baraou denuded Tellez of his interim WBA 154-pound title and claimed it for himself. This Baraou an angle to pursue WBA champion Terence Crawford.
In the aftermath of this victory, it was evident that Baraou was overcome with emotion. With this being the case, he did not take the occasion to mention any particular fighter that he wanted to face next. Technically speaking, his interim title puts him on collision course with divisional champion Terence Crawford. Trouble for the German is Crawford’s September 13 dance date with Mexican icon and undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.
LET’S BE SENSIBLE
Following his dance with Alvarez, there is no guarantee that Crawford will ever return to the 154. Said to say, it would seem to be a fool’s errand to wait for his reemergence in the weight class. Team Baraou could try to press for fights with the other established champions: Xander Zayas (WBO), Bakhram Murtazaliev (IBF) or Sebastian Fundora (WBC).
If being realistic though, this specific group will probably have bigger fish to fry. In many respects, his best bet may be to operate as the sitting champion and face the next ranked contender. This would point to #2 (WBA) ranked pugilist Jesus Ramos. Ramos was last in action this past March 22 against Guido Schramm.
Team Ramos should be reentering the market looking for a fight. A prizefight for an interim title seems sufficient a carrot to lure the Arizonan into the ring. Sadly, for the moment, we are back to the waiting game and seeing at a later date what Team Baraou has up their sleeve right now.
