David Benavidez Sees Hope of Facing Canelo Alvarez in 2024
It’s no secret that what’s foremost on the mind of two-time 168-pound champion David “The Monster” Benavidez is a battle with the current king of the division, undisputed champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs). The question is: will it ever happen? Benavidez has his fingers crossed that it will occur by the end of this year.
OPTIMISTIC TO A FAULT?
Benavidez was ringside for Alvarez’s victory over Jaime Munguia in Las Vegas, Nevada. When asked by the DAZN broadcast team about his chances of getting in the ring with Canelo, Benavidez said the following:
“It’s definitely a fight I want to see. It’s a fight that all the fans want to see. So, it’s a fight that’s too big to leave on the table. The fans are demanding it more and more, and we’ll definitely get it on soon.”
However, Alvarez holds the cards to make it a reality. He claims he’d fight Benavidez, but only if the money is right.
Alvarez versus Benavidez is arguably the most talked-about potential fight in the sport. To many in the boxing community, the money demands of Canelo are a smokescreen and the undisputed champion’s way of ducking out of a match with the native of Phoenix, Arizona. There’s been plenty of chatter on social media and boxing message boards that The Monster needs to move on.
Benavidez has an upcoming fight against Oleksandr Gvozdyk for the WBC Interim light heavyweight title. But his appearance at Alvarez versus Munguia says his heart is still at super middleweight. Maybe Benavidez knows something that the public doesn’t. As he told DAZN, he still plans to campaign at 168 and 175.
Will the public see a showdown between Alvarez and Benavidez? It’s one of the biggest questions in boxing. For The Monster and the boxing community in general, they hope that the answer is yes.
