David Benavidez v Jose Uzcategui set for August 28
WBC number one ranked super middleweight contender David “Red Flag” Benavidez (24-0, 21KOs) returns to ring August 28. He will be in against former IBF Super Middleweight champion Jose “Bolivita” Uzcategui (30-4, 25KOs) on August 28. The fight will be a WBC title eliminator. Benavidez also ranks number two in the WBA rankings. Interestingly enough is Uzcategui does not rank with the WBC at all. However, he does rank number five with the IBF.
CAN UZCATEGUI MAKE THIS FIGHT COMPETITIVE?!
At one point, Uzcategui was thought to be a real player at 168. He had gained the IBF title scraping over former top super middleweight contender Andre Dirrell in their 2018 rematch. However, his reign as champion would be short-lived after defeating Ezequiel Osvaldo Maderna by a unanimous decision. He would move on to face his mandatory Caleb “Sweethands” Plant (21-0, 12KOs). In that fight, Plant would drop Uzcategui twice en route to losing an unanimous decision.

From there it would be up and down for the Venezuelan. He would suffer a surprising defeat against Lionell Thompson in December of 2019. His most recent ring outing came in March where he scored an eighth round technical knockout over Josue Obando (20-29-2, 15KOs). As for Benavidez, he is coming off an eleventh round TKO win over Ronald Ellis (18-2-2, 12KOs) back in March.
CANELO SHOT ON THE LINE!
For Benavidez, a win would give him the opportunity to fight Canelo Alvarez (55-1-2, 3)! Benavidez has yearned for a fight with the Mexican superstar for the longest. However, he is going to have to get by a formidable Uzcategui. This match will be an action-fight as both men have notable punching power and offensive prowess.
