David Benavidez v Jose Uzcategui in the Works for January
It appears that a clash between former 168-pound champions David “Red Flag” Benavidez (26-0, 23KOs) and Jose “Bolivita” Uzcategui (32-4, 27KOs) will happen after all, according to ESPN. In case you forgot, these two were supposed to meet last November. However, a failed drug test by Uzcategui scrapped the scheduled bout.
Benavidez, a two-time WBC super middleweight champion, is one of boxing’s most avoided fighters. He’s called out WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo, former IBF champion Caleb Plant, and undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez. Unfortunately for him, none of those fights have come to fruition. In his last ring outing, he disposed of former IBF middleweight champion and hard-hitter David Lemieux.
In the case of Uzcategui, he’s coming off of a second round knockout of Felipe Romero back in May. While the former IBF super middleweight champion isn’t a top name in the sport, he’s a very formidable and dangerous opponent. With both men possessing fight-ending power and fan-friendly styles, this fight has the potential to be a knockdown, drag-out brawl.
