Edgar Berlanga Claims a Fight with David Benavidez is in the Near Future!
Rising super middleweight contender Edgar “The Chosen One” Berlanga (18-0, 16KOs) will take a big step up on March 19 when he takes on tough veteran Steve Rolls (20-1, 11KOs). The hard-hitting Puerto Rican currently sits at #9 in the WBO and #13 in the WBA rankings.
After starting off his career with sixteen consecutive knockout wins, Berlanga has been forced to go the distance in his last two fights. His last fight saw him get dropped in round 9 against Marcelo Esteban Coceres.
Being tabbed as a potential star in boxing, it’s easy to look ahead to possible matchups if you’re Berlanga. One matchup in particular has been talked about on more than one occasion, and that’s a fight with former two-time WBC 168-pound champion David Benavidez (25-0, 22KOs).
Both men have fight-ending power, fan-friendly styles, and have expressed interest in one day locking horns. However, for Berlanga’s sake, he needs more time to grow as a fighter, sharpen up on his skills and gain more experience. This is something he is aware of.
I NEED A COUPLE OF MORE FIGHTS!
When asked about a possible matchup with Benavidez, The Chosen One had this to say:
“That fight is in the near future, for sure. You know, the promotion, the business got to be right, and you know, I gotta get a couple more fights in, couple more rounds in. He’s already been at that pinnacle plenty of times. So for me, I just gotta wiggle my way through and get that experience, and the fight can be done.”
Hopefully Berlanga develops into the fighter he and Top Rank believes he can be and a showdown with Benavidez materializes.
