Could Evelin Bermudez Look to Flyweight Champions for her Next Challenge?
Unified light flyweight champion Evelin “La Princesita” Bermudez (17-0-1, 6KO) overcame early troubles by out-boxing three-time title challenger Yairineth Altuve (13-4, 11KO). Bermudez, in control of the division, can push for undisputed or move up to fight unified flyweight champion Marlen Esparza.
In the early portion of the fight, Bermudez was having trouble adjusting to the pressure from the Venezuelan challenger. She kept getting hit by the overhand right as Altuve landed the punch over the champion’s low jab.
In the third round, something clicked for Bermudez. She came out boxing beautifully, using stiff jabs and straight right hands to keep Altuve at bay. The Argentinian champion took control of the fight while Altuve was in retreat mode. She was coming forward with a pole-like jab, going to the body with precision.
The Argentinian crowd cheered for their champion as she continued to fight strong. Bermudez was relentlessly coming forward with the jab and overhand right. She went for the knockout as Altuve started going backward for the remainder of the fight.
When the final bell sounded, the fans showed respect for the efforts of both fighters. Two judges scored it 99-91, and one had it 98-92, another dominating performance for the unified champion.
WHAT IS NEXT?
Unification may be unattainable in a timely fashion against WBA Super champion Jessica Nery Plata. The same can be said about the winner of WBC champion Yesenia Gomez versus Kim Clavel. Bermudez should look towards the flyweight division.
Bermudez has three lucrative options at flyweight to challenge. Two options are Argentinian champions IBF Leonela Yudica and WBO Gabriela Celeste Alaniz. Both of those fights would bring the fans running to the arena in droves as pride for the country’s best fighter would be on the line.
Bermudez isn’t too keen on fighting outside her country, as she received a controversial draw against Silvia Torres in a debut fight in Mexico in 2019.
COMING TO AMERICA?
However, a fight with unified champion Marlen Esparza on American soil could be enough to pique the interest of La Princesita. Esparza, with Golden Boy on the global platform of DAZN, would be hard to resist, and a victory would make Bermudez a household name.
Whatever La Princesita decides, 3Kings Boxing will be front and center with the news to the boxing community.
