Bill Haney Says Adrien Broner is Serious About Making a Fight

Recently, four-division world champion Adrien “The Problem” Broner (35-4-1, 24 KO’s) and two-division champion Devin “The Dream” Haney (31-0, 15 KO’s) exchanged words via social media. While somewhat entertaining, there were not a great many fans who put much stock into this duel coming to fruition. Now however, Bill Haney, father and chief second to Devin Haney, informed ThaBoxingVoice that Team Haney is not playing any games with The Problem.

“I can say that AB is a man about his business because his team reached out and its on the table, specially Don King . . . Let me tell you, when a dude like AB tell his people to call and they call, I take it serious!”

THE RECENT PAST

On the surface, there are many reasons as to why this match should not take place at the moment. To begin, Haney is riding high in the sport due to his last four bouts. First, he toppled George Kambosos to become the undisputed lightweight champion of the division and then immediately rematched and beat Kambosos again.

After Kambosos, The Dream toppled future Hall of Famer and three-division champion Vasiliy Lomachenko. In his last bout, following Lomachenko, Haney moved up and then thoroughly outclassed former WBC junior welterweight champion Regis Prograis. Given this latest run, Broner, who has only fought twice in the past four years, didn’t strike many as a very viable opponent.

In fact, Bill Haney seemingly dismissed this fight. Yet, despite all of this, the elder Haney insists that of all his potential adversaries, Broner is the only one actually stepping up. One possible opponent is the heavy-handed Subriel Matias, but Bill Haney is adamant that Team Matias is not serious.

“I have talked to him, you have to report on this. I gave the man my telephone number, I told him. He was supposed to call me on a Saturday, he never called me on the days. He’s hung up on the phone with me. They give off I could be harassing them [vibes].”

SELLING A FIGHT

Without question, Broner is currently going through a serious slump in his career. At the same time though, Broner is still a big name and one of the best talkers and most recognizable faces in the sport. Provided that the two camps do come to an agreement, the pre-fight build-up between the teams would certainly be fun and very hard to forget.

So, for the time being, let’s see what comes of the negotiations. At the moment, it appears that there is a great chance that we will get this duel in the first quarter of 2024. Just stay tuned to 3Kings Boxing to see if this potential fight becomes official.
