Blair Cobbs Takes An Opportunistic Angle to Battle Teofimo Lopez
In pursuit of his next big fight, WBO junior welterweight champion Teofimo “The Takeover” Lopez (21-1, 13 KO’s) has targeted three-division champion Terence Crawford. While on the chase however, Lopez opted to try to bait Crawford with lowbrow racial slurs. Naturally, this tactic rubbed quite a few people the wrong way. For his money however, welterweight contender Blair “The Flair” Cobbs (17-1-1, 10 KO’s) is not offended or wringing his wrists in perplexity.
Instead of being triggered, as he explained to Fight Hype, Cobbs was far more motivated than enraged.
“You want to call people monkeys, why don’t you fuck with the monkey right here? I like to monkey around . . . It’d be fun and I think that’s what boxing needs – Blair The Flair and Teofimo Lopez to go at it. I think that is a good mix . . . Again, I’m not going to get mad if he calls me a monkey – I am a monkey! Somebody like me is hard to offend.”
PRIMATE PROVISION
Truth be known, Lopez versus Cobbs is actually a pretty good fight proposition. Cobbs has worked his way up from boxing anomaly and part-time jester to a serious threat in the welterweight division. In his last performance, The Flair garnered all new respect when he roughed up, dropped and knocked out the tooth of Adrien Broner. That memorable showing took place after a nearly two-year layoff.
With the rust knocked off, Cobbs is obviously in the market for the biggest opponent he can nab. For his part, Lopez is not only looking for his next fight but a serviceable outing. His last two prizefights, versus Steve Claggett and Jamaine Ortiz, left the boxing public desiring a whole lot more. Stepping up in weight to face the established hard-hitter would be a bold move by Lopez who is still becoming acclimated to his new 140-pound landscape.
As Cobbs made it quite plain and clear that his feelings were not pricked by Lopez’s words, it’ll be interesting to see if The Takeover is moved by The Flair’s call out. So let’s see if there are any further developments in this potentially brewing situation.
