Bruce Carrington To Fight for a World Championship in 2025?

There are high hopes for rising featherweight Bruce “Shu Shu” Carrington (11-0, 7 KOs) to contend for a championship soon. Is the product of Brooklyn, New York ready to step in and face the elites in the division? In his mind, the answer is an emphatic yes.

MAKING THINGS CLEAR

Carrington will face Brayan “La Roca” De Gracia on June 8 at Madison Square Garden in New York, City. Many boxing community members still view Shu Shu as a prospect. But during an exclusive interview with Kevin Iole, Carrington pushed back against that narrative. He wants the world to know he’s now a world contender and ready to face the best at 126.

“I don’t consider myself a prospect at this point because I am ranked highly in three sanctioning bodies – the IBF, the WBO, and the WBC. I don’t know what prospect is ranked in all of those sanctioning bodies.

So no, that’s not me anymore. I’ve had my fun . . . I’ve accomplished what I needed to accomplish as a prospect. But now it’s time to fight for them chips (championships).”

HE BELIEVES THAT HIS TIME IS NOW

Based on the receipts from his previous outings, you can see why Carrington feels that way about himself. He’s been impressive up to this point in his career and has steamrolled the competition.

The attributes are clear to see whenever you see the New Yorker fight. Carrington’s most recent outing was a highlight-reel fourth-round knockout over Bernard Angelo Torres in February 2024. Shu Shu has speed, timing, and great size for a featherweight. In the ring, he’s mature for someone with limited professional experience. It all adds up to one of the most talented up-and-coming fighters in boxing.

But does that mean that he’s ready to fight for a world title right now? The featherweight division is in transition. The current world champions at 126 are Rey Vargas (WBC), Nick Ball (WBA), Luis Alberto Lopez (IBF), and Rafael Espinoza (WBO).

But none of those fighters have established themselves as the standard-bearer in the division. In short, the division is wide open. If talent and skill mean anything, Carrington can compete with any of the world champions and has the physical attributes to beat any of the present world title holders.

First and foremost, Carrington must take care of business against De Gracia on June 8. Intending to fight for a world title in 2025, Shu Shu believes he will be the man who will take over the division.
