Zuffa Needs to Make Callum Walsh vs Stevie McKenna
At the 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland, Irish middleweight Callum Walsh remained unbeaten. Walsh overcame an early scare to score a unanimous decision (98-91, 98-91, 96-90) victory over Tyler Denny. With the win, he improved to 17-0 (11 KOs) and could now be headed toward a highly anticipated domestic showdown with fellow Irishman Stevie McKenna.
It was a difficult opening round for Walsh, as Denny (21-5-3, 1 KO) dropped him in the first stanza. However, Walsh quickly responded, scoring a knockdown of his own in the second round. From there, the fight settled down in the fourth. Walsh utilized his boxing ability, movement, and distance to take control. The action heated up again in the final round, with both fighters abandoning caution and exchanging heavy shots until the final bell.
Although Walsh is currently ranked comfortably with the WBC, WBO, and IBF at 160 pounds, he doesn’t appear quite ready for a world title opportunity. Zuffa Boxing would be better served matching him against someone who can provide a meaningful test while generating considerable interest.
ENTER STEVE MCKENNA
McKenna made his case for the matchup on the same card, stopping Owen O’Neill in the opening round. Following the victory, McKenna immediately called for a fight with Walsh, prompting a tremendous reaction from the Irish crowd.
A Walsh-McKenna showdown would be an intriguing clash between two unbeaten Irish fighters with plenty to prove. More importantly, it would give both men an opportunity to establish themselves as one of Ireland’s leading middleweights.
If Zuffa Boxing can make it happen, Walsh vs McKenna would be an ideal fight to close out the year, and one Irish boxing fans would undoubtedly embrace.
