Aaron McKenna Ready to Challenge any Middleweight in the World
Ireland’s Aaron McKenna achieved a lifelong dream on Saturday night, defeating Etinosa Oliha by unanimous decision (116-112, 117-111, 118-110) to capture the vacant IBF middleweight championship at 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland. McKenna’s (21-0, 10 KOs) ambitions extend far beyond simply becoming a world champion. After accomplishing his first major goal, the unbeaten Irishman has his sights set on conquering the entire 160-pound division.
After a relatively slow opening, McKenna began imposing his will with his superior size, speed, and boxing ability. Oliha (22-1, 10 KOs) struggled to find his rhythm throughout the contest. McKenna consistently beat him to the punch and dictated the distance.
The Italian challenger was outboxed from the outside. However, McKenna also proved capable of getting the better of the exchanges when the two fighters engaged at close range. It was an impressive all-around performance, particularly considering McKenna had been inactive for 16 months.
Fighting in front of a passionate home crowd, McKenna showed little concern about the lengthy layoff. Instead, he looked composed and confident as the fight progressed, ultimately securing a clear decision and the biggest victory of his career.
FIRST OLIHA; NOW THE WORLD?
Following the fight, an ecstatic McKenna declared himself the best middleweight in the world and proclaimed that he is ready to face anyone at 160 pounds.
Now comes the difficult part: backing up those words. Winning the IBF title is a tremendous accomplishment, but claiming supremacy in one of boxing’s deepest divisions requires McKenna to defeat the other elite fighters at middleweight. There is no shortage of dangerous challengers waiting to test whether the newly crowned champion’s confidence matches his ability.
For now, though, McKenna can celebrate. After years of hard work and an extended period away from the ring, he finally has a world championship around his waist. The mission to conquer the middleweight division begins now.
