Canelo Alvarez Proves to be Too Much for Edgar Berlanga
After twelve rounds of hard shots and bad blood, unified super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KO’s) defeated brash challenger Edgar “The Chosen One” Berlanga (22-1, 17 KO’s) by unanimous decision.
As was expected, Alvarez simply had too much experience for Berlanga to overcome. Canelo came out pressing the action and going straight after his younger foe behind a stiff jab and mean spirited hooks. His aggression was rewarded by a crunching left hook that set Berlanga on the seat of his pants round three. To his credit, The Chosen One got up and fought on without any serious issues.
During the second half of the match, Berlanga did appear to settle down a bit and fight more comfortably. If anything, his biggest mistake was falling into the trap of waiting too much for Canelo to go first. Throughout the entire fight, even with the knockdown, Berlanga showed that he could absorb Alvarez’s power. Regardless of his durability, The Chosen One just could not overshadow the work-rate and accuracy of the champion, nor significantly show new wrinkles in his game.
When the duel went to the cards, Canelo won the day by unanimous decision (117-110, 118-109, 118-109).
