Erislandy Lara Retains WBA Title With Win Over Danny Garcia
At the conclusion of nine completely dreary rounds, WBA middleweight champion Lara “The American Dream” Lara (31-3-3, 18 KO’s) defeated Danny “Swift” Garcia (37-4, 21 KO’s) by way of ninth round TKO. With the victory Lara retained his WBA middleweight title.
Given the utter lack of meaningful action, there is frightfully little to report in this soggy co-main event. Having been out of the ring for a bit over two years, Garcia shuffled around the ring looking lost and totally unwilling, or unable, to engage in any meaningful offense. Sadly, his counterpart, Lara, who was once known for his beautiful footwork, plodded around wearing his 41 years of age on his sleeve.
Then in a shocking turn of events, toward the end of the ninth, Lara thumped Swift on the nose with a solid left jab which Garcia seemed to think about and then took a knee. He would beat the count but once in the corner, his father and chief second, Angel Garcia quickly called a halt to the match. It is unclear what Garcia will do with his career after this. However, if this is the type of performance that he will turn in, it’s best that he hang up the gloves. The win marked Lara’s fourth consecutive stoppage win.
