Canelo medically cleared to return in December – but on which network?
Unified Middleweight Champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez suffered a cut over his eye during his fight with Gennedy Golovkin.
Looking to return this year in December, Alvarez was given the green light to start training in October.
The Mexican star is without a doubt one of the biggest attractions in boxing. With that being said, the next question that needs to be answered is where this fight will land.
Golden Boy Promotions’ home for PPV fights was HBO. However, last weeks event was the last contractual obligation Canelo had with the network. For decades, HBO was considered the pinnacle for boxing; showcasing some of the most memorable fights in history. Consequently, boxing is the very sport that catapulted HBO into millions of homes. This makes it all the more striking that the last few years have seen a significant shift in the networks’ unwillingness to continue its support.
Now, it will be a frenzy as the hottest free agent in boxing is looking for a new home. Golden Boy Promotions will have plenty of options. Showtime is one viable option, as they once showcased their star there in the early years.
Then, there is ESPN and DAZN. It’s worth noting that GBP has contracts with both ESPN2 and Facebook to showcase bouts.
With Canelo now medically cleared, the next phase of his return could very well change the landscape in boxing.
