Canelo Goes After Berlanga for Pumping his Ring IQ

During their most recent presser, things got rather testy between unified super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KO’s) and his latest opponent, Edgar “The Chosen One” Berlanga (22-0, 17 KO’s). As is his way, Alvarez took offense to some of the tough talking that Berlanga has been doing as of late. Yet, it was Berlanga claiming that his ring IQ will be the main factor to grant him victory, that seemed to amuse Canelo.

“You think you have more IQ than Floyd Mayweather, Miguel Cotto, [Erislandy] Lara? Come on bro, you’re acting! Take it easy! Take it easy and wait, your turn is coming! He is nothing compared to them.”

CRAZY LIKE A FOX…OR JUST CRAZY?!

It was rather shocking to hear that of all his potential advantages, Berlanga is hanging his hat on IQ as the pinnacle factor for victory. This is because he is younger, fresher, bigger and maybe time will show that he has more pop in the gloves. Yet, whether you love him or hate him, there is no denying that Canelo has a resume littered with great fighters.

On top of the three titans he already mentioned, his ledger also contains: Austin Trout, James Kirkland, Amir Khan, Gennady Golovkin, Billy Joe Saunders, Sergey Kovalev, Jermell Charlo and Caleb Plant. The Chosen One has yet to face anyone as a professional who has accomplished half of anything that anyone of these pugilists has.

In the end though, this is why they fight the fights, as they say. So there is a chance that Canelo and many throughout the boxing world will have ample crow to eat on September 15. However, if Berlanga does manage to score the huge upset, it will be all the more amazing if it was due to his in-ring wit rather than brawn.
