Canelo Signs Up For Year-round Testing

Alvarez announces decision via social media

It’s been all over the media the past couple of days about Canelo Alvarez and him being dropped from the WBC official rankings for his refusal to sign up for year round testing with VADA.

Now it seems he has had a change of heart as he took to social media to inform the world. Tweet below:

This is a step in the right direction after all the criticism surrounding Alvarez due to his failed drug tests that caused the cancellation of his rematch with Gennady Golovkin. The failed test also lead to a six month suspension for Alvarez from the state of Nevada.

I myself threw plenty of criticism his and his promoter’s way.

Golden Boy CEO, Oscar De La Hoya, had put added pressure on his fighter by coming out in public and saying that Alvarez would be tested daily. Of course anyone familiar with the sport and drug testing policies knew that wasn’t so but it still created a stir.

After taking such a hit in the media and the fan’s eyes this is definitely a step in the right direction. It’s also a good look for the sport as a whole when arguably it’s biggest star has made this step.

Maybe this can hurry up the negotiations with Golovkin for their much anticipated rematch. De La Hoya is on record saying he expects the fight to happen in September when Alvarez makes his return from suspension.
