Knockout CP Freshmart vs Carlos Canizales Needs to Happen Next
Thai veteran Knockout CP Freshmart is once again a world champion—this time becoming a two-division titleholder. But given the circumstances surrounding the bout, the most logical next step is a long-overdue clash with Carlos Canizales.
In his most recent outing, Freshmart (29-1, 11 KOs) earned a unanimous decision over Junior Leandro Zarate (26-6, 9 KOs) to capture the vacant WBC junior flyweight title at The Imperial Queens Park Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand. The bout was marred by frequent clinches and awkward exchanges. However, Freshmart pressed the action throughout and ultimately deserved the verdict.
A former long-reigning champion at 105 pounds, Freshmart had been scheduled for a trilogy bout with then-WBC 108-pound champion Carlos Canizales (28-3-1, 20 KOs). But when Canizales withdrew due to travel complications stemming from political unrest in Venezuela, the WBC opted to strip him of the title rather than postpone the fight.
Canizales’ withdrawal stemmed from circumstances entirely outside his control. Therefore, the fairest resolution—and the matchup that maintains the division’s integrity—is to reschedule the between Canizales fight. It’s the bout fans were promised, and the one that makes the most sense to determine the rightful champion.
