Crawford Loses Undisputed as WBC Opens Window for Canelo
The boxing news cycle has been buzzing after the WBC decided to strip multi-divisional champion Terence “Bud” Crawford. This move not only makes him no longer the undisputed super middleweight champion, but it also opens the door for Saul “Canelo” Alvarez to once again get the belt.
WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman tried to explain the reasoning behind stripping Bud for non-payment of sanctioning fees. Next, the organization confirmed that top contenders Hamzah Sheeraz and Christian “Solide” Mbilli will face off for the title. Boxing fans should brace themselves for the possibility that Canelo will look to face the winner for the title.
Canelo has been radio silent since losing the titles to Crawford back in September. But this move makes perfect sense when you consider that he is ranked number #1 by three of the major sanctioning bodies. In addition, he is still within striking distance of the IBF title with a #3 ranking. The WBC named #4-rated Lester Martinez as the mandatory challenger to the winner of the Sheeraz vs Mbili fight.
Boxing fans shouldn’t be surprised if the WBC gives Canelo special treatment; it is something they have done before. If Canelo is announced as the next challenger for the title, all eyes will be on the Sheeraz vs Mbili showdown in 2026.
