Chamberlain Stops O’Leary In Ten
In a bloody battle for the lightly regarded IBO 140-pound title, Mark “Thunder” Chamberlain took away “Big Bang” Pierce O’Leary’s unblemished record via stoppage. Both fighters have confirmed that a rematch will happen next.
The fight had the making of an instant classic from the opening bell. Big Bang (19-1, 11KO) barely survived the early rounds in front of a loud Irish crowd in Dublin. He suffered a possible broken nose and was dropped twice.
Cruising to an early lead, Thunder (18-1-1, 13KO) slowed down in the second half and was dropped by a vicious body shot. It was downhill from there as he was hit repeatedly with hard shots over the next couple of rounds. In the tenth round, Thunder landed a barrage of hard shots forcing the referee to stop the fight.
Immediately following the fight, during the post-fight interview, Queensberry Promotions Chairman Frank Warren claimed there would be a rematch.
“They entertained, they went right into the trenches. Unbelievable fight; it swung two ways at one stage, and they’re going to have to do it again. There is a rematch clause there.”
With a rematch on the horizon, Chamberlain wants it to take place in his hometown in the United Kingdom.
