The Continuing Drama and Saga That is Julio Cesar Chavez Jr
When it comes to Julio Cesar Chavez Jr (53-6-1, 34 KOs), controversy seems to always follow. That was the case once again during his ten-round bout against David Zegarra (34-7-1, 21 KOs) of Peru at the Palenque de la Feria Ganadera in Culiacan, Mexico on December 18.
In the bout itself, Chavez Jr landed the harder shots. The former WBC world middleweight champion was in control throughout. But, here is the point of contention that would make one’s eyebrow raise. According to local media reports, the judges did not release their official scorecards. Instead, Chavez Jr was simply declared the winner by unanimous decision.
Whether it’s repeated failures to make a contracted weight, his outside-of-the-ring activities, or poor performances in the ring, it’s the latest in the long line of unsettling moments involving the 35-year-old. Prior to this “win” over Zegarra, Chavez Jr suffered a humiliating loss to former UFC legend Anderson Silva in June of 2021.
Chavez Jr is far removed from the hard-charging middleweight champ that had the fans riveted with his final round effort against Sergio Martinez in 2012. As a fighter, he’s on his last legs with no signs of trending upward. Whether it’s his own personal demons or the fact that he gets chance after chance that he doesn’t deserve, the man has been a giant disappointment and seems to be on a downward spiral.
This latest saga will do nothing to restore the hopes of fans and pundits. If anything, it adds to the sordid web and that is Chavez Jr.
