Michael Conlan Seeks Return to Win Column Versus Miguel Marriaga in August
When last in the ring, two-time Olympian and highly-touted featherweight fighter Michael “Mick” Conlan (16-1, 8 KO’s) was saddled with his first professional loss. In that contest, which is many boxing fans’ Fight of the Year candidate, Conlan would fall victim to a very dramatic and sensational twelfth round knockout after dominating the early rounds to WBA Regular featherweight champion Leigh Wood. In fact, being pinned against the ropes as he was, Mick fell right out of the ring after being put to sleep by a picture-perfect straight right.
To his credit, Conlan didn’t make any excuses for the outcome and gave his victor, Leigh Wood, his just due. Unsurprisingly, Conlan was gung-ho to get his shot at revenge. Even with this detrimental setback however, Mick still is ranked #9 (WBC) and #4 (WBA). With those standings, the proud Irish fighter is eager to relaunch his mission to obtain a world title. This is why Conlan, 30, is now set to go head-to-head with two-time title challenger Miguel “The Scorpion” Marriaga (30-5, 26 KO’s) in his next at bat. The two will go to war in the SSE Arena located in Belfast on August 6.
Similar to Conlan, Marriaga is coming off a loss. Although his was a unanimous decision defeat at the hands of Eduardo Ramirez. In fact, The Scorpion, 35, is now 2-2 in his last four dustups. Given this reality, this is a must-win match for both fighters. There will also be a great deal of speculation given to how Mick will look in his first duel after such a devastating loss. Regardless of how either athlete performs however, 3Kings Boxing will be there to report the news!
