Michael Conlan is Looking for Rematch with Leigh Wood

There is no question that the last prizefight for featherweight Michael “Mick” Conlan (16-1, 8 KO’s) did not go the way that he planned. Although it certainly started out picture perfect for him! This is because when Mick slid into the ring to battle Regular WBA featherweight champion Leigh Wood, he flattened the champ in the first round. The knockdown was so devastating that most thought the fight would end in short order.

Instead, Wood displayed Wolverine-like recuperative powers and managed to claw his way back in the fight. Ultimately, Wood went on to score a thrilling twelfth round stoppage himself. Yet, not only was Conlan cold-cocked and knocked senseless, he went sprawling out the ring head first. When watching live, it provided a scary moment for many. Before anyone truly knew what his condition was, he was whisked away from the arena strapped to a stretcher and rushed to the hospital. In the end, Mick was fine and was quick to give credit to the victor.

“It is what it is. Like I said before, I said in the build-up, he’s tough, very tough. He has a big heart and a big set of balls and he showed them last night! So, fair play to him.”

HATS OFF

Remaining humble in defeat, Mick made no excuses for the outcome of the fight.

“I’ll be honest, I can’t really remember too much of the last round! I remember the start of it, we started boxing, kind of pressure a little bit and then you know fatigue kicks in and he lands. I tried to do a defensive move and I’m not looking where his shots are coming. And I think that’s why I got knocked out because every shot that was coming, everyone that did land, every shot that I did see hadn’t affected me. So it was the one that I didn’t see and they say it’s the shots that you don’t see that did the damage and it was true. He landed a great shot…as I said before I have much respect for Leigh, fair play to him, he done the job. And I am gracious in defeat as I would have been in victory. ”

LET’S DO IT AGAIN!

Unsurprisingly, when asked about his thoughts on the matter, Conlan would love to mix it up with Wood again.

“Fair play to Leigh, he done the job. I came up short but, 100% I want the rematch, 100%! I think I’ve earned a rematch from that fight…I think it’s a logical one, a rematch between me and Leigh could do probably bigger numbers in terms of the money.”

Given how exciting the fight was, there is little doubt that a rematch would be warmly embraced by the boxing fans. So, let’s wait and see what’s next for these two gritty boxers.
