Jermell Charlo Wants Terence Crawford Fight At 154 After Canelo
Dislike could describe the feelings that undisputed junior middleweight champion Jermell “Iron Man” Charlo (35-1-1, 19 KOs) and unified welterweight champion Terence “Bud” Crawford (40-0, 31 KOs) have for one another. The junior middleweight champion is making it clear that he badly wants a fight with Crawford and already has a plan to make that matchup a reality.
On September 30, Charlo will move up to 168 to face reigning undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Some boxing fans have speculated about whether Charlo plans to stay at 168. But on social media, Iron Man detailed what he intends to do after the upcoming match with Alvarez.
Crawford is coming off a dominant ninth-round stoppage over then-unified 147-pound champion Errol Spence on July 29 to become the undisputed welterweight champion. Following the win over Spence, Crawford said that if there is no immediate rematch with Spence, he would love to get his hands on Charlo. During the fight with Spence, cameras caught Bud taunting Charlo, who was ringside witnessing the action.
WILL THEY FINALLY SETTLE THEIR DIFFERENCES?
Would it be wise for Charlo to face Crawford immediately after fighting Alvarez? The junior middleweight champion is in the process of transforming his body to deal with fighting at a higher weight for Canelo. Then there would be the process of going back to 154 to fight Crawford. Putting on the extra muscle and taking it off is delicate and tactical process that would require a lot of discipline on his part as well as an excellent physical and conditioning coach.
Here’s something else worth considering. If Charlo defeats Alvarez, surely the Mexican superstar would want a rematch. Would the Iron Man turn down what would be a big payday in a rematch at 168 to seek a fight with Bud at 154?
If Charlo is true to his word, a fight with Crawford would presumably happen sometime in 2024. They’ve exchanged heated words over the years. Charlo vs Crawford is something that fans would eat up and would certainly qualify as a mainstream pay-per-view event.
