Another big fight is on the horizon at welterweight between the Garcias!
3kingsboxing.com has recently learned Danny “Swift” Garcia (35-2, 21 KO’s) and Mikey Garcia (39-1, 30 KO’s) are close to announcing a clash for the fall!
According to sources close to the matter, both teams have agreed to all terms for a prizefight. A win for either would give their career a much needed boost.
A prizefight against Swift would mark Garcia’s first bout since his total shutout loss to Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr back on March 16 after moving up two weight divisions. Once in the ring, he was thoroughly outclassed and outworked for twelve straight rounds.
Across the ring, the other Garcia is just one win removed from his latest defeat at the hands of Shawn “Showtime” Porter. Swift dropped a unanimous decision loss to the Ohio native in September 2018.
Seven months later he bounced back into the win column when he scored an impressive knockout over the tough and gritty Adrien Granados. It was the first stoppage defeat of Granados’ career.
The bout between the two fighting Garcia’s would more than likely be staged in the welterweight division. Danny has fought as a welterweight for the past five years and is unlikely to move anytime soon.
Even though Mikey was thoroughly dominated by Spence, he displayed the ability to handle big shots from a full-fledged welterweight. Spence is widely regarded as one of the hardest punchers in the division, especially to the body.
Garcia v Garcia is definitely an interesting prizefight on paper. There are still a ton of questions about how Mikey would fare against some of the other elite at 147.
Likewise, Danny has lost a lot of steam in his career since moving to welterweight. He lost both times that he stepped up in competition there. A dominant victory over the highly touted four-division champion would greatly improve his own name value!
Let’s hope that a formal announcement comes in the coming days!
