David Benavidez Calls For Canelo Alvarez After Defeating Caleb Plant

Two-time WBC super middleweight champion David “The Mexican Monster” Benavidez (27-0, 23 KO) won the “bad-blood” feud against former IBF champion Caleb “Sweet Hands” Plant (22-2, 13 KO). Following the victory, he made it clear that a showdown with undisputed champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (58-2-2, 39KO) is what he wants next.

The fight started how most fans and boxing enthusiasts believed it would go, with Plant having early success before fading. In the second half of the contest, Benavidez overcame horrible reffing by veteran Kenny Bayless to serve up a beating on Plant en route to a unanimous decision victory. The biggest story of the fight was the terrible job by the referee in allowing Plant to hold throughout the contest.

Already the mandatory WBC interim champion, Benavidez needed to win the fight to keep the opportunity of possibly scoring a fight with the undisputed champion alive.

BRING ON CANELO ALVAREZ

It’s a known fact he has been chasing the Mexican champion for quite some time. Matchroom Boxing Promoter Eddie Hearn stated that upon winning the fight, the two-time champion should call out Alvarez.

In the post-fight interview, Benavidez quickly called for a fight when asked what he wanted to do next.

“I have a lot of respect for Canelo Alvarez, but he has to give me that shot now. That’s what everyone wants to see me versus Canelo. Let’s make it happen in September.”

When asked if he believes the undisputed champion is avoiding him.

“I don’t think he’s trying to avoid me. I believe he has a lot of options, but now the fans have been calling for this fight, the legends have been calling for this fight, so let’s make it happen.”

Canelo will be defending the undisputed crown against WBO mandatory challenger John Ryder on the traditional Cinco De Mayo weekend. Upon retaining the titles, it will be interesting to see if team Alvarez looks in the direction of The Mexican Monster.
