David Morrell Jr Retains WBA Regular Title After Dispatching Mario Cazares
Hot WBA “Regular” super middleweight champion David Morrell Jr (5-0, 4 KO’s) continued his winning ways. by stopping WBA #15 ranked contender Mario Abel Cazares (12-1, 5 KO’s) in the first round of his first title defense!
Morrell first picked up the interim title when he outpointed Lennox Allen in August 2020. This win was especially notable due to Cazares being undefeated. Thus far, the amateur standout continues to shine brightly while being moved aggressively through the pro ranks.
SHORT NIGHT IN THE OFFICE
The bout started fast and ugly with both men getting wrapped up in a number clinches. When not tangled up the two fighters threw their shots with bad intentions. Just as it seemed we were getting ready for an extended battle of wills, Morrell clobbered Cazares with a straight left that froze him in his tracks.
Immediately seeing that his foe was impaired, the champ followed with the same punch, landing flush on the chin. Upon impact of the second shot, Cazares instantly crumbled and collapsed to the canvas in a heap of limp limbs. Seeing his completely shabby condition referee Mark Nelson wasted little time waving the contest off.
This is an exceptional win for the young champion from Minnesota. While he does hold a piece of the WBA crown and looked very impressive in this fight, it may still be some time before you see him in the ring with one of the elite in the division.
