Davis Likely To Face Cuellar

Davis is scheduled to fight April 21st

Former IBF junior lightweight titleholder Gervonta Davis,19-0 18 KO, is scheduled to fight April 21 according to the big rollout event Showtime held a few weeks ago. Davis was last in the ring in August on the undercard of Mayweather and McGregor.

Presently there’s no set opponent but there have been talks for a title eliminator vs. ex-featherweight titlist Billy Dib. The IBF originally ordered a purse to take place on January 29th but the two sides asked for extra time to try work out a deal. The bid was rescheduled for Feb. 6 but still didn’t happen because the IBF was told there was a deal. Although that seems not to be the case according to sources within both teams.

3KingsBoxing.com has learned that Davis will likely face former secondary featherweight champion Jesus Cuellar. The fight will likely be for a “regular” WBA world title according to sources. Yay boxing fans! Another title!

In all honesty Cuellar, a former featherweight titlist, has done nothing to warrant a title fight at junior lightweight. He’s literally fought one time since December 2015 in which he lost to Abner Mares in December 2016.

It’s the same complaint I had when the WBO allowed Vasyl Lomachenko To face former featherweight Manuel Marriaga last year when he was coming off a lose. Marriaga had at least been active, although that’s still no excuse.
