“Tank” Davis Says a Fight with Him is Dangerous for Frank Martin

With his dominant decision win over Michel Rivera on December 17, Frank “The Ghost” Martin (17-0, 12 KOs) grabbed the attention of fans and pundits. It was the kind of performance that put the lightweight division on notice that he had arrived. Afterward, Martin said he was ready for any of the top names at 135, mentioning fighters such as WBA ‘regular’ champ Gervonta “Tank” Davis.

OMINOUS WARNING

While training in Miami, Florida for his upcoming fight against Hector Garcia on January 7, 2023, boxing media members asked Davis for his thoughts on Martin and whether he was interested in fighting him. Tank didn’t mince words as he gave Martin and his promoter, Errol Spence, an ominous warning.

“Of course, hell yeah . . . I’ve seen Errol, and he said some stuff about it. Errol better watch out, get his fighter hurt bad like I did before.”

THE BACKSTORY

The two previously sparred at the Mayweather Gym in Las Vegas, Nevada. Martin has said those in attendance gave him very positive reviews about how he fared with Davis during those sparring sessions. Davis has a different opinion of how things went down. It’s the ultimate he said/she said. The general rule is that what happens in the gym stays in the gym.

Davis is asserting Martin is not ready to fight him and is not in his league. But Martin’s win over Rivera suggests something different. He brought to bare his speed and athletic ability. The Ghost also showed discipline, a terrific jab, and outstanding footwork. In truth, Martin has faster hands and feet than Davis.

While it’s true that the lightweight champ is one of the hardest punchers in the sport, his boxing skills are underrated. But with noted trainer Derrick James in his corner, one would think Team Martin could have some success in a match against Davis.

HOW THIS FIGHT COULD HAPPEN

Davis – Martin is a fight that could occur as early as late 2023. Tank’s next bout is with Garcia. Should he win, he will battle Ryan Garcia in April 2023. Should Davis win those bouts, his schedule would be open for the remainder of that year.

With his win over Rivera, Martin moves up to the number one ranking by the WBA at 135. Do not be surprised if, at some point in 2023, the sanctioning body orders a fight with Martin and Davis. Tank is suggesting that he would handle Martin with ease. Martin says he wants to fight him with the title on the line. It’s a fight that has a distinct possibility of happening next year.
