Lawrence Okolie Defends WBO Title On Sky Sports Under Boxxer Promotions
In boxing, fighters leave networks, promotional companies, and trainers. There are times when they return, and all is forgiven as the path to greater pastures begins. Sky Sports seems to be very happy with the return of WBO cruiserweight champion Lawrence “The Sauce” Okolie (18-0, 14KO). Furthermore, he will be fighting under a new promotional company in Boxxer.
In what turned into a long drama-filled divorce, Okolie and Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn things went downhill. Both teams spent months arguing over whether the British champion was still under contract for one more fight. Things got so bad that the WBO had to step in, demanding an immediate purse bid for Okolie to defend the title against mandatory challenger David Light.
THINGS ARE FINALLY SETTLED
A sign that things were leaning in favor of Okolie was in an interview with Seconds Out, where Ben Shalom of Boxxer doubled down on the fact that the WBO champion was no longer under contract.
“We’ll he’s completely out of contract now. We’ve had that warranted by lawyers.”
It turns out that was true as the WBO terminated the purse bid issuing a statement that both team Okolie and Light have reached an agreement.
“According to the fighters through their representatives, the bout will be promoted by Boxxer and will take place on Saturday, March 11, 2023.”
OKOLIE HAPPY TO BE BACK ON SKY SPORTS
This means the WBO champion will be fighting on the network that helped kick off his career. The British fans remember watching his career journey begin under the UK sports network. Furthermore, his biggest achievements including winning the WBO title, happened under the bright lights of the Sky Sports network.
Pleased to be back on Sky Sports and ready to defend the championship, Okolie took to social media to let the fans know it’s going down.
